Democrats Work, a Contest Every Race program

Democrats Work

No one should be pushed into financial hardship because they got sick or needed care.

That's why local Democrats are raising funds to purchase and forgive medical debt for neighbors and community members. Every dollar raised goes toward eliminating up to $100 in medical debt, helping bring relief to local families.

There’s no application, no paperwork, and no catch. Just neighbors helping neighbors.

Tell your story

Help others understand the impact of medical debt.

Medical debt affects millions of Americans, but statistics only tell part of that story. Behind every bill is a person, a family, and difficult choices no one should have to make.

If medical debt has impacted you or someone you love, we want to hear your story. Your experience can help others understand the real consequences of medical debt and show why communities are stepping up to help their neighbors.

Together, we will build solutions that make healthcare more affordable for everyone.

About Contest Every Race

Nearly 400 county parties, in 40 states.

Contest Every Race is a national downballot candidate recruitment and local, year-round organizing initiative. We support local Democratic Parties with funding and infrastructure so they can show up and work in their communities year round.

Your local Democratic Party raised funds to relieve medical debt because they believe there's nothing more important than neighbors helping neighbors.

How it works

This is how a community comes together.

In partnership with a nonprofit organization, local Democratic Party volunteers raise money to purchase and forgive medical debt for their neighbors. The process is designed to protect your privacy: community members know their contributions helped relieve medical debt, but they never know whose debt was forgiven.

The fight against medical debt continues one story at a time. Share yours now.

Community members together

The broader effort

The relief is the centerpiece. The relationships are the legacy.

Alongside the debt relief itself, the program supports authentic storytelling from community members affected by medical debt and coordinated communications about healthcare affordability, helping us better understand how visible, community-based relief shapes public conversation.

By giving county teams a meaningful, year-round project rooted in direct service, this program will strengthen local relationships, build trust, and deepen their connection to the communities they serve.
